Well, we took our time to run through the just concluded Headies Awards (perhaps the most coveted Awards Show in Nigeria) and here are our observations.
First off, the hosting of the Event was shoddy, with little or no connection with the attendants for most parts of the night.
Then time constraints as the Show didn’t get on until about 11:42pm or so; an event scheduled for 9:00pm. It ended at a funny 4:00am Monday morning; a supposed work day. And that explains why P- Square who had the last performance of the day had to entertain almost empty seats at the Convention Center, Eko Hotel.
Then the poor audio feedback qualities were dispiriting to say the least.
Cynthia Morgan’s performance left quite some jaws dropping and all, with her nearly-popping out tit. Great stage presence from her though.
Our songbird, Tiwa Savage, and Patoranking had quite the fusion on stage as well, a pointer that there’s more to come from where the previous hit collaboration – Girlie O Remix – came from? Perhaps.
Davido had a BIG night, taking home two plaques in all. Superb stuff. Even though we feel his year wasn’t more buzzing musically than Wiz’s. I mean, if you look at the amount of collaborations Wiz Kid has had all year long – A-list collaborations, that is – then it’ll be a crime to even think David has anything on him for the year in view. Other than this, the Yemi Alade-Patoranking bit is also contestable, seeing as the Next Rated category supposedly represents tomorrow’s next “big thing” in the Industry, a position characterized by all such virtues as originality, export potentials and longevity; features for which Pato has ABSOLUTELY nothing on Yemi. Shucks. This isn’t the first time the Awards will dampen our expectations, the organizers don’t intend carrying on like this and losing all that’s left of their credibility, do they? Just an observation.
Yes, Patoranking also had a ball at the Headies, winning at the prestigious Next Rated category that comes with a spanking new Hyundai. This should be a major feat in his fledgling career. Massive feat for the young star whose career looks quite promising, except that he won’t cut down on his inordinate yearnings to sound “foreign”, a bit too Jamaican to be true. His acceptance speech for the Next Category though, all sorts of deep and emotional and sh*t; almost making many a guest shed a tear or two. Interesting how the lad has climbed up the ladders, very interesting and worth rewarding too. Brilliant stuff.
In all, a lot was amiss on the night, a whole lot considering the experience, clout and resources at the disposal of the organizing team of probably Nigeria’ BIGGEST Awards Show. From the ‘unnaturally accented’ female host to the timing, DJ-Performance incongruence and the likes. Again, in respect to winners, Yemi Alade, Patoranking Runtown and Wiz Kid are perhaps the most ‘hit’ of the lot.
That said, below’s a complete list of the winners on the night;
