The Archbishop of Jos, Ignatius Kaigama has come out to stress that the Catholic Church in Nigeria is opposed to any kind of discrimination against homosexuals.
Last year, federal government passed a law that hands a 14-year sentence to anyone in a same-sex union or in a homosexual relationship.
Archbishop Ignatius Kaigama in a statement to the press said (via The Tablet)
“We are not supporting the criminalization of people with different sexual orientations,” Archbishop Kaigama stressed. “We would defend any person with homosexual orientation who is being harassed, who is being imprisoned, who is being punished.”
“The Government may want to punish them – we don’t. In fact we will tell the Government to stop punishing those with different orientations.”
