If the news reaching us is true, then we are set for the biggest domestic box office battle in recent times when 2 industry heavy weights do battle for supremacy or bragging rights of Nigerian Cinema.
The media is already going agog for Kunle Afolayan’s political thriller titled October 1? with some reviewing it as flawless and finding little or nothing to criticise in the film. Lancelot Imasuen’s Invasion 1897 is also very much eagerly anticipated having taken a few years to produce and treating a subject matter that will find a solid audience base particularly those interested in the history of the Benin kingdom and the role of the British in the events that transpired then.
Industry analysts are divided on their thoughts about this epic battle. Some believe that the industry is still too young to accommodate this kind of competition and that the audience is very narrow due to the lack of growth in cinema screens to support the ?increasing interest in cinema-going by Nigerians generally. Others believe that the competition is a healthy one that will eventually throw up a winner that will ultimately be born out of having a superior film, a better executed marketing strategy and of course better box office numbers.
Whatever the case is, this is one battle we think will do both films and their makers a lot of good as the build-up alone is worth talking about.
May the best film win!
