Allison Janney in “I, Tonya”
Lesley Manville in “Phantom Thread”

Mary J. Blige has just set records for having two nominations at the same time. Her marriage was falling apart when she landed the role of a sharecropper’s wife, Florence, in Dee Rees’s lauded film “Mudbound,” and she poured her pain into the performance, earning multiple awards nominations.
The 58-year-old Allison Janney has wins at the Golden Globes, Critics’ Choice and Screen Actors Guild Awards for her portrayal of Harding’s mother LaVona in I, Tonya. And now, as the infamous skater told her, she’s going to the “big top” with a Best Supporting Actress nomination at the 90th Annual Academy Awards.
Longtime Chicago theater actor Laurie Metcalf, who won her first Tony Award last June, is in the running for her first Oscar for her acclaimed work in “Lady Bird.”
Lesley Manville played to perfection the icy Cyril Woodcock of Phantom Thread. The movie has acquired a quietly growing, intense fame on the Internet.
Octavia Spencer is blazing a trail for black women around the world by getting her third Oscar nod.
She has been nominated for Guillermo del Toro’s fantastical romance The Shape of Water, making her the first black actress to get two nominations after an Oscar win.
This makes her the first black actress to receive Oscar nominations in back-to-back years and with three nominations, she has become the most nominated black woman in the Academy Awards history alongside Viola Davis.
