Mexican-Kenyan award-winning actress, Lupita Nyong’o has just reached another milestone in her career.
Lupita Nyong’o is set to be the first black person ever to chair the Berlin International Film Festival jury. The screen diva will pilot the selection of the winning films in the two major categories; Golden bears and Silver Bears.
Elated, the actress took to her Instagram page to announce her new role,
“Let the festivities begin. I’m so honored to be this year’s @berlinale Jury President and look forward to celebrating one of the things I love most: cinema! @boss.”

Being the first black person to chair the jury of the prestigious Berlin International Film Festival (Berlinale) in its 74-year history, the Oscar-award-winning actress emphasized the importance of representation and diversity within the jury.
The Berlinale, alongside Cannes and Venice, is considered one of the “Big Three” film festivals in the world. The appointment of a black woman as its jury head entails its strong commitment to inclusivity devoid of race, ethnicity, and gender.
Lupita Nyong’o’s numerous achievements include an Academy Award for her role in “12 Years a Slave” and nominations for a Tony Award and a Golden Globe Award.
