In a recent interview with Apple Music’s Zane Lowe, music superstar Davido shed light on the inspiration behind his A.W.A.Y Festival. He recalled an encounter with a young artist whose music he heard playing in a club. Upon receiving Davido’s call, the artist was in disbelief.
This experience, Davido explained, epitomizes the festival’s essence – to shine a spotlight on emerging talents in the music industry. “The motivation behind this endeavor stems from those moments when I’m in America and hear a song that unmistakably screams African,” he shared.
“Filled with excitement, I reach out to my friends, exclaiming, ‘This is a young artist on the rise!’ I then contact the individual, expressing my admiration for their music. Often, their response is one of utter disbelief, akin to, ‘No way!'”
The A.W.A.Y Festival aims to provide a platform for such artists, offering them an annual opportunity to showcase their artistry and connect with a wider audience.
Last year, the inaugural edition of the A.W.A.Y Festival was postponed following the passing of Davido’s son, Ifeanyi Adeleke. However, the festival is now scheduled to take place on Saturday, November 18, in Atlanta, Georgia.
