Seasoned actress Kate Henshaw has expressed her candid views on the continued relevance of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) program, suggesting that its original purpose has faded with time.
Henshaw posits that the NYSC program should be brought to an end, as she argues that it no longer serves its initial intention, particularly due to the security risks faced by corps members as they traverse different parts of the country.
Taking to her social media platform, Henshaw also took a trip down memory lane, reminiscing about her own experience during the one-year mandatory service. She fondly recalled the peaceful and harmonious atmosphere that prevailed back then. She shared her recollections, stating, “When I served in the North,it was a very memorable experience. Travelling from Bauchi by road to the airport was safe & then flying to Lagos just with my NYSC ID card, which also got me rebate on my ticket.
Henshaw’s statements highlight the stark contrast between her own NYSC experience and the present situation. She advocates for a complete overhaul of the program, emphasizing that the safety of young corps members must be a paramount concern, “It’s time to SCRAP this idea since corpers can’t travel within this country without LET OR HINDRANCE!.
The actress’s call to action is underpinned by her concern for the well-being of young individuals who participate in the NYSC program. She admonishes against jeopardizing their lives through outdated and ineffective practices. Henshaw underscores the urgency of prioritizing national security and advocates for a comprehensive solution to the challenges faced by young corps members. In her words, “Security must take precedence and necessitates a thorough and uncompromising resolution, not a half-hearted attempt.”
