While growing up certain characters made screen time a major delight, Sola Sobowale’s portrayal as Toyin Tomato in the Super Story classic, Sam Dede’s role in the Action-Thriller Issakaba and the list goes on and on.
It is interesting to note that some of these icons have crawled their way back to the big screen with lead roles like back in the day. Sola Sobowale’s reintroduction with Kemi Adetiba’s King of Boys; Kenneth Okonkwo’s resurgence in Living in Bondage: Breaking Free, a sequel to the film that launched his career in 1992; and Chidi Mokeme’s comeback as Scar in the Netflix original series, Shanty Town has only gone to show that these icons still have a lot to give.
The inclusion of these legends in recent movies has provided the Nigerian movie industry with the needed quality in its production.
In 2020 alone King of Boys got nominated in 7 categories at the African Magic Viewer’s Choice Awards (AMVCA), while Shanty Town had 10 nominations at the 9th edition of the AMVCA.
The beautiful mix of old and new acts in the Nollywood industry will definitely help rejig the pattern of not only our storytelling but also the quality of our production and its delivery.
Which Nollywood icon will you love to see make a comeback in a blockbuster?
