Ukrainian comedian who used to play the President, Volodymyr Zelensky has won the Ukrainian Presidency according to early projections.
Zelensky, who has promised to only rule for a term, was able to resonate with the youth demography during the campaign, while his opponent, Poroshenko was unable to.
Zelensky eventually garnered over three times as many votes as Poroshenko, and prepares to govern over a country that is one of the poorest in Europe as well as an inherited conflict with Putin.
Poroshenko, who is the incumbent had consistently painted Zelensky as a puppet of the billionaire oligarch who owned the TV channel where he works, and who is believed to be tied to Russia.
It isn’t currently clear what Zelensky’s domestic or foreign policy is, as he has only done the easiest part by winning the election.
But his country men would have gotten an inkling of how he prepares to rule after he unveiled his team live on television on Thursday. Of the 20 people he introduced, there were just four women, with the youngest being 26 and the oldest being 62. It also included some well known names like, former finance minister Oleksandr Danyliuk, former economic development and trade minister Aivaras Abromavicius, and lawmaker and anti-corruption campaigner Sergii Leshchenko.
Prior to his political career, Zelensky obtained a degree in law and created the company Kvartal 95, which produces films, cartoons and TV comedy shows.
