This September, Nigeria is set to experience a transformative campaign that will reshape the dialogue around women’s economic power. “Her Money, Her Power,” a
bold collaboration between The She Tank and BellaNaija, will bring crucial issues to the forefront, emphasizing the importance of Nigerian women having financial freedom.
We have seen great progress in Nigeria when it comes to women’s economic power. For example, we recently had a female Nigerian finance minister, and several top bank MDs are women. But in the day-to-day lives of everyday women, Nigeria still has a long way to go. This disparity is evident in the 2024 World Economic Forum Global Gender Gap Index, where Nigeria ranks a disappointing 125th out of 146 countries. “Her Money, Her Power” aims to break down these barriers and drive a shift that uplifts not just women but entire communities.
The campaign is poised to significantly impact Nigeria’s most influential platforms. The ongoing Big Brother Naija show will feature a special segment dedicated to these themes, while BellaNaija and widespread ads across the Multichoice network will ensure the message reaches every corner of Nigeria and beyond. The ultimate aim? To inspire women to take control of their financial futures and push for policies that enhance their economic power. Women’s economic power isn’t just about financial security—it’s about gaining the freedom to make decisions that shape lives. When a woman has her own money, research shows the benefits ripple out to her family, her community, and her country.
Closing the gender financing gap could even inject $1.1 trillion into the global economy by 2030. “Our campaign seeks to elevate the critical importance of women having their own money,” Blessing Omakwu, Founder of The She Tank and former director at the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, stated. “When a woman has economic power, she doesn’t just have a seat at the table, she has a voice at the table, and the power to make decisions at that table. With economic power, a woman also has the power to leave any table where she is not being valued.”
Nigerians worldwide are encouraged to join the conversation using #HerMoneyHerPower, sharing their stories and support. Stay connected with the campaign on BellaNaija and be part of a movement set to make a lasting impact on Nigerian society.
