SONY Music Drops R. Kelly
Sony Music has decided to end its relationship with R Kelly after the revelations in the Surviving R Kelly series.
R. Kelly’s name has been removed from the RCA Records website, which lists the label’s signed artists early on Friday, which means the company has decided to take a stand in the aftermath of recent allegations against the singer.
A Lifetime documentary, “Surviving R. Kelly,” painted R. Kelly as a sexual predator and interviewed several women who accused him of sexual misconduct. Many have since called for the record company to drop him, including a women’s organization UltraViolet, which flew a plane carrying a sign reading “RCA/Sony: Drop Sexual Predator R. Kelly” over Sony Music’s Los Angeles office.
The allegations against the singer dates back to over 20 years, starting from his relationship and consequent marriage to then 15 year-old Aaliyah. Witnesses say R. Kelly forged her date of birth to 18, while another said she saw him having sex with Aaliyah. He was also charged with child pornography in 2000 after a video surfaced that allegedly showed him having sex with an underage woman.
The legal ramifications to RCA/SONY isn’t clear yet, as R. Kelly can decide to sue the company for breach of contract.
