Serena Williams has been named 2018 Associated Press Female Athlete of the Year. This is the fifth time she has been won the honor.
The AP spokesperson said: “Now 37 and a new mother facing some players who weren’t even born when she turned pro in 1995, Williams isn’t the same person who ruthlessly ran her way to 23 Grand Slam singles titles — the last of which came at the 2017 Australian Open when she was pregnant,”
Her perseverance won her the honor after complications from childbirth meant she had to go through four operations because of blood clot. She returned to Tennis less than a year after that and got to two grand slam finals.
Tennis players will now be able to wear leggings and compression shorts without without a skirt over them after Serena wore her now iconic black catsuit in the 2018 French Open.
Coming in second and third for the honor were gymnast Simone Biles and Notre Dame basketball player Arike Ogunbowale, respectively.
