Defending Champion Garbine Maguruza has been knocked out. She joins the rank of high profile stars to be knocked out early in this year’s Wimbledon.
She was beaten in the second round by Alison Van Uytvanok, the world number 67 from Belgium. She now joins Caroline Wozniacki, Petra Kvitova, Maria Sharapova and Sloane Stephens, to be knocked out. Only world number one, Simona Halep and No 7 Karolina Pliskova are rremaining in the top eight.
This is the first time in the history of the competition that only two of the top eight will make it out of the second round.
Van Uytvanok looked almost unplayable atimes and deserves to be in the third round.
She said:
“I played a very good match, so really happy to be through to the third round,” Van Uytvanck said. “I stepped it up in sets two and three. Inside I was like dying, especially serving out for the match. I was in the zone and just hitting every ball and it’s going my way.”
Van Uytvanok started didn’t start well and lost the first set but she took the the second set to level the match, and when she broke serve in the fourth game. Muguruza’s spirit was broken, and two games later, the match was over,
Mugaruza, obviously dissapointed said:
“I think she played big today,
“She took a lot of risk, and it worked for her. I also think that my level today was not where I wanted it to be. It is a little bit sad because I wanted to really go out there. But I think she played great.
Van Uytvanck will meet World No 28 seed Anett Kontaveit of Estonia in the Fourth round.
