A drought in Zimbabwe is putting more than a quarter of Zimbabwe’s population at the risk of starvation. imadequate rainfall has resulted in an adverse shortfall in rainfall causing a shortage of food that is affecting up to 3 million people.
The drought also affects some other Southern African countries like Malawi and Zambia as the El Nino weather phenomenon puts as many as 14 million people at risk in Southern Africa.
The Zimbabwean government is seeking more than $1.5 billion in aid to provide much needed food and water. Zimbabwe’s vice president Emmerson Mnangagwa said at a news conference yesterday, “The government of Zimbabwe requires a total of $1.57bn with effect from February to December 2016,”
“The amount of rainfall received to date is inadequate to meet basic household consumption needs as well as support for livelihoods, agriculture and wildlife.”
