National League for Democracy (NLD) has won a landslide election victory in Myanmar’s first openly contested elections in 25 years.
Led by Nobel Peace prize winner and winner of the cancelled 1990 elections, Aung San Suu Kyi, there was really little doubt since the counting began that the NLD had captured the votes by a large margin.
More than 80% of seats have been declared and the NLD has comprehensively defeated the USDP and can now pick the President. Myanmar’s constitutional restrictions means that Aung San Suu Kyi cannot become President but she has said she will lead the government.
President Sein Thein had indicated yesterday that he will respect the wishes of the people after the military backed ruling party faced certain defeat.
Despite the election results, the new President will only be picked in January when the new Parliament convenes.
