Some people said he was pushed off the bridge while others say he jumped for fear of the Taskforce who were patrolling and purportedly looking for “offenders” defaulting on the Environmental Sanitation Laws.
According to PM News, the Taskforce Officials stormed Obalende to enforce the law when the incident occurred around 6.30pm, yesterday October 22, 2015.
An eyewitness said, at about 6:30 p.m, the deceased, who hails from Adamawa State, North East Nigeria, was watching the Taskforce Officials from the top of the bridge as they were dislodging street traders and illegal motorcycle operators under the bridge beside the Oando Filling Station when he suddenly sighted another Taskforce Officials’ patrol van in the opposite direction.
According to John, the deceased presumed he would be the next to be captured by the Taskforce Officials, in a bid to circumvent the arrest he jumped over the bridge and landed on top of the iron beautification barriers under the bridge. He sustained fatal injuries on his head and other parts of his body and died instantly.
Immediately after the incident occurred, an irate mob gathered and attacked the officials, vandalizing their vehicle before running them off towards the 3rd mainland bridge. The Taskforce Officials were able to escape the irate mobs by shooting in the air to scare them away.
