The Nobel committee has awarded this year’s Nobel Peace Prize to the Tunisian National Dialogue Quartet.
The National Dialogue Quartet is a coalition of businesses, labor Unions, lawyers and human rights activists.
The group was formed after the political uprising in Tunisia following Boauzizi’s self immolation.
Tunisia’s revolution had far reaching impact, sparking what is today referred to as the “Arab Spring” which saw the topple of long time rulers such as Hosni Mubarak and Muammar Gaddafi.
Although the quartet comprises four organizations: the Tunisian General Labor Union; the Tunisian Confederation of Industry, Trade and Handicrafts; the Tunisian Human Rights League; and the Tunisian Order of Lawyers, the Norwegian Nobel Committee explained that the prize “is awarded to this quartet, not to the four individual organizations as such.”
The Nobel committee stated that the quartet received the award for ” its decisive contribution to the building of a pluralistic democracy in Tunisia in the wake of the Jasmine Revolution of 2011.”
