It is hard to dismiss the fact that rape is one of the societal scourges which needs addressing. Ending the culture of shaming the victims and identifying the perpetrators as the real problems is one way to end this problem.
It is somewhat worrisome that even celebrities have been accused of rape. It’s hard to forget that Bill Cosby has been accused by more than 20 women of date rape.
Nigerian musician, Timaya, becomes the latest celebrity to be dogged by rape allegations. Last month, a woman in Atlanta, Georgia allegedly filed a police complaint against top Nigerian pop artist, Timaya, accusing him of rape.
While Georgia’s law enforcement and prosecutor’s office reviews and determines whether they will in fact charge Timaya with rape, USA based fashion and entertainment lawyer, Ms. Uduak, who is also the founder of AfricaMusicLaw.com, discusses the legal standard of rape under Georgia Law that will affect Timaya if he is charged.
She also discusses the criminal sentencing persons like Timaya may be subjected to if convicted of rape in Georgia: death penalty, life in prison without parole, or a minimum of 25 years imprisonment and a lifetime of probation, and mandatory registration as a sex offender.
The podcast episode also delves into the case of Bill Cosby and Ghana’s Asamoah Gyan, captain of the Black Stars soccer team, both of whom are also accused of rape.
It is a must listen, informative and powerful episode.
