US midterm elections take place today, November 3, as millions of Americans vote to determine congressional control and shape President Donald Trump’s remaining presidency. Voters will decide all 435 House seats, alongside 35 Senate seats, while gubernatorial contests unfold across 36 states nationwide.
Republicans currently control both congressional chambers, but Democrats hope voter dissatisfaction and campaign momentum will help them reclaim legislative power. The US midterm elections represent a major political test for Trump, whose administration faces scrutiny over domestic policies and foreign affairs.
Democrats need a net gain of four House seats to secure a majority, while Senate control also remains fiercely contested. Republicans entered Election Day holding a 218–214 House advantage, with two vacancies and one independent caucusing alongside their party.
In the Senate, Republicans hold 53 seats, while Democrats and allied independents together occupy 47 seats before today’s contests. Competitive Senate races in Texas, Ohio, Maine, Michigan, and other states could determine which party controls the chamber next year.
Meanwhile, voters across 36 states will also choose governors, adding important state-level contests to this year’s national political landscape. More than 57 million Americans had already voted early, according to election coverage, highlighting substantial participation before Election Day officially arrived.
Campaign spending has reached record levels, as candidates and outside groups invest heavily in advertising, organizing, and voter outreach efforts. President Trump urged Republican supporters to participate, presenting the election as consequential for his administration’s agenda and legislative priorities.
Democratic leaders hope congressional victories would strengthen oversight, influence committee leadership, and challenge policies they oppose during Trump’s second term. However, Republicans are campaigning to preserve their majorities, arguing that continued congressional control would support the president’s legislative objectives.
The US midterm elections will shape Washington’s balance of power, congressional investigations, policy debates, and political positioning ahead of 2028.
