Tyla calls for African unity amid anti-immigration violence in South Africa

Tyla, the South African pop sensation, has prayed for African unity amid renewed anti-immigration violence in her country.

South Africa has seen renewed anti-immigration protests in recent months. Nigerians, Ghanaians, Kenyans and other African immigrants have faced violence during the demonstrations.

Several Nigerians have also returned to Nigeria in various repatriation batches as tensions continue to grow.

Tyla spoke after winning the AfriPure International Achievement prize at the 2026 South Africa Music Awards. She said she was proud to be African and hoped to see greater unity across the continent.

“I’m just so happy to be South African, to be African most of all, and I pray one day to see a united Africa; it’s so important,” she said.

Her remarks came weeks after some Nigerian social media users called for a boycott of her Lagos concert. The calls followed renewed concerns over xenophobic attacks against Nigerians in South Africa.

The users said Lagos should not welcome Tyla unless she publicly addressed the reported attacks. The controversy has further strained long-standing tensions between Nigeria and South Africa.
