However, Trump did not explain how the government would finance payments that could reach millions of American adults nationwide directly. Current estimates suggest the program could cost more than one trillion dollars if approximately 240 million adults qualify for payments.

Vice President JD Vance later suggested wealthy Americans might not qualify, creating uncertainty around Trump’s original promise to voters currently.
The proposal follows earlier payment ideas Trump promoted, including a tariff dividend and another proposed dividend linked to DOGE publicly. Neither earlier proposal produced broad payments, leaving questions about whether the latest Trump $5,000 dividend can become reality eventually soon.
