TikTok denies restricting access in Northern Nigeria, saying the disruption affecting users in states did not originate from its platform. Keagile Makgoba, TikTok’s Head of Communications for Sub-Saharan Africa, issued the statement on Monday amid mounting complaints about service access.
The company said it was engaging relevant stakeholders to address the problem while reaffirming its commitment to keeping communities connected. Users in Kaduna, Kano, Kebbi and Sokoto have reported trouble loading videos, viewing content, refreshing feeds, and uploading posts.
Some users say TikTok works when they connect through virtual private networks, though this does not establish who caused disruption. The company has not identified the cause, named the stakeholders involved, or announced when users can expect normal service again.
Complaints first surfaced around September 14, according to reports, prompting digital-rights groups to request an independent technical investigation into disruption. A coalition of society organisations says the problem affects communication, access to information, and people who depend on TikTok commercially daily.
The groups have urged regulators, telecommunications operators, and relevant authorities to clarify whether technical faults or external measures explain disruption. TikTok’s denial addresses its role, but it does not independently resolve questions about network routing, service providers, or possible restrictions.
Experts say testing could help determine whether the disruption stems from application settings, internet routing, technical failures, or intentional interference. The incident has raised concerns about digital access for creators, small businesses, journalists, and communities that rely on online platforms.
For creators, TikTok offers entertainment, audience reach, marketing opportunities, and income, making prolonged access problems potentially costly for local businesses. Makgoba said TikTok remains committed to community access as discussions with relevant stakeholders continue over the reported service disruption locally.
