HBO Max’s “The Pitt” and “Hacks” led this year’s Emmy Awards nominations, giving the streaming platform a strong start ahead of television’s biggest night.
The Television Academy announced the nominations on Wednesday. “The Pitt,” a hospital drama, earned 25 nominations to lead the drama category. “Hacks,” a comedy about a Las Vegas comedienne, followed closely with 24 nominations.
The Academy said the 24 nominations for “Hacks” set a new record for the highest number of nominations received by a comedy programme in a single year.
Apple TV’s horror-comedy “Widow’s Bay” placed third overall with 19 nominations. The streaming service’s dystopian drama “Pluribus” also secured a place among the top contenders.
The 78th Emmy Awards will take place on September 14 at the Peacock Theatre in Los Angeles. NBC will broadcast the ceremony, while Peacock will stream it.
The nominations mark a major achievement for HBO Max. The platform now leads both the drama and comedy categories heading into the awards ceremony.
The strong showing also comes at a key moment for Warner Bros. Discovery Inc., HBO Max’s parent company. Paramount Skydance Corp. is currently working to acquire the media giant.
Winners will be announced during the September ceremony.
