Tems Cancel Show in Rwanda, Apologises to Her Fans, Cites Reason for Pulling Out

The Nigerian Grammy Award winner Temilade Openiyi better known as Tems, recently took to her social media accounts to announce the cancellation of her show in Rwanda.

Nigeriaโ€™s Grammy-winning singer Tems announced on Thursday she was cancelling an upcoming concert in Kigali over Rwandaโ€™s support of the M23 armed group waging an offensive in eastern DR Congo.

The announcement came amid international condemnation of Rwandaโ€™s backing of the M23 group, which seized control of the city of Goma this week in the Democratic Republic of Congoโ€™s mineral-rich east.

Tems, revealed in a post on X that she was cancelling a concert at BK Arena in the Rwandan capital on 22 March.

“So I recently promoted my show in Rwanda without realising that there is an ongoing conflict between Rwanda and Congo. I never ever intend to be insensitive to real-world issues, and I sincerely apologize if this came across that way.”

The singer further shared how ignorant she was of the conflict between Congo and Rwanda when she started promoting her show:

“I simply had no idea this was going on. My heart goes out to those affected. Conflict is no joke and I truly hope and pray for peace in this time.”

Why Tems cancelled her Rwanda show

The post came hours after M23 leaders vowed to โ€œcontinue the march of liberation all the wayโ€ to the DR Congo capital Kinshasa.

The UK government said on Thursday it was considering reviewing British aid to Rwanda over its involvement in the crisis.

DR Congo has accused Rwanda of waging an offensive to profit from the regionโ€™s mineral wealth. A report by UN experts in July supported these claims, finding that Rwanda has thousands of troops in eastern DR Congo and holds โ€œde facto controlโ€ over the M23.

Rwanda has denied the accusations.

Netizens react as Tems cancels show in Rwanda

Here are some of the reactions that trailed Tems’ announcement after she cancelled her upcoming show in Rwanda:

@umwamikazirw:
“Rwanda welcomes Servants of God, Gospel singers, Patriots โ€ฆ when time comes for the devils to cancel their events, We kneel down and Praise the Holy Name Of Jesus.”

@sundaynzitatira:
“I donโ€™t think Rwanda is going to miss anything, very few Rwandans even know who you are.”

@yvonnebabss:
“I donโ€™t think Rwanda is DRCโ€™s enemy the real enemy is the West and all their African Allies ,South Africa ,The DRC government itself amongst others! No need to cancel your concert, really people could use some fun amidst all this chaos!”

@neves7bobe:
“Actions speak louder than words baby girl! cancel your concert if you truly support the DRC! Come to the DRC, and weโ€™ll help you organize a concert that will bring you twice the amount you were supposed to earn in Rwanda!”

@oladapomikky1:
“I’ll be putting the blame on your management because proper research could have been made in order to avoid this.”

@corneliusmambi3:
“Similarly to businesses conducting market research prior to expansion, artists must remain informed about global affairs. Music possesses immense power, but so does awareness. A performance is not merely entertainment; it serves as a form of messaging. Staying abreast of current events is not solely about political considerations; it is about demonstrating respect, responsibility, and a connection to the world.”

@rusinepatrick:
“I really admire you, but your reason for not coming to Rwanda doesn’t seem to be #TRUE. I can’t judge you but it seems you might not be aware of the #REAL issue.”
