Filmmaker Seun Oloketuyi has petitioned the Inspector-General of police (IGP), seeking the prosecution of members of the Adedibu family over alleged threats to his life, cyberbullying and criminal defamation following a dispute over a biopic on late Ibadan politician Lamidi Adedibu.
In the petition dated October 16, Oloketuyi accused Bose Adedibu and other members of her family of threatening to harm him unless he removed the film, titled ‘Adedibu: Alagbara Ibadan’.
He alleged that he received threatening calls from private numbers after the film’s release. He also accused the family of using social media to describe him as a “thief, scammer, fraud and criminal”.
The dispute began after the Adedibu family accused the filmmakers of producing the biopic without their consent and misrepresenting the late politician’s private life and political career.
The family demanded the film’s removal, a public apology and N500 million in damages.
Oloketuyi’s lawyers rejected the allegations, arguing that the production drew on publicly available information about Adedibu’s life and political career. They also offered to review specific claims the family considered inaccurate.
ADEDIBU FAMILY REJECTS RESPONSE
In a letter dated October 12, the family’s lawyers described Oloketuyi’s response as “condescending and legally flawed”.
They maintained that the film invaded the late politician’s privacy and contained false claims about his personal life, marriage and political career.
The lawyers also accused the filmmaker of defamation of living relatives, copyright infringement and unauthorised commercial use of Adedibu’s personality.
They gave Oloketuyi 72 hours to remove the film, disclose the sources of the allegedly private information and provide YouTube analytics showing the revenue it generated.
The family also threatened legal action at the Oyo High Court and complaints to the Nigeria Data Protection Commission and the Nigerian Copyright Commission if he failed to meet its demands.
In the letter, the lawyers added: “Your threats of injurious falsehood are laughable. Truth is our defence. We have not published anything false about your client. You published falsehood about ours for money.”
OLOKETUYI SEEKS POLICE INTERVENTION
In his petition, Oloketuyi asked the IGP to direct the appropriate police units, including the NPF National Cybercrime Centre and the Force Criminal Investigation Department, to investigate the alleged threats.
He also requested protection, the invitation of Bose and other family members implicated in the allegations for questioning, and the prosecution of anyone found responsible.
The petition urged the police to “Take immediate and effective steps to protect our client’s life and safety, and to prevent any further threats against him”.
