SERAP Urges Cuts to Presidency, Lawmakers’ 2025 Budget

The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has called on Senate President Godswill Akpabio and House Speaker Tajudeen Abbas to reduce extravagant allocations in the 2025 budget for the presidency and National Assembly.

In a letter dated December 21, 2024, SERAP flagged N9.4 billion for travel and catering for the presidency and N344.85 billion for lawmakers as excessive, urging redirection of funds to address Nigeriaโ€™s budget deficit and public needs.

SERAP criticized N26 billion earmarked for asset rehabilitation, a significant jump from N14 billion in 2024, and the N8.74 billion proposed for local and international travel by President Tinubu and Vice President Shettima.

The organization also questioned repeated allocations for similar items in the National Assemblyโ€™s budget and called for transparency, accountability, and fiscal responsibility.

SERAP warned of legal action if the Assembly fails to act.
