Ryan Gosling is officially joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Ghost Rider in a new standalone film set for release in 2028.

Marvel Studios announced the project during its Hall H presentation at San Diego Comic-Con. The studio also confirmed that Shawn Levy will direct the movie, while Jonathan Tropper will write the screenplay.

Marvel Unveils New Ghost Rider Film

The upcoming movie marks another collaboration between Gosling and Levy. The pair recently worked together on Star Wars: Starfighter, which is scheduled for release in May 2027.

Levy shared his excitement about the project while appearing on stage with Gosling and Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige.

“I’m having the greatest flashback vibes here, because I was here two years ago when we showed ‘Deadpool & Wolverine,’” Levy said.

“I’ll never forget that night, because I was introduced to the greatest fans. Gosling is the absolute shit. I say that with tremendous respect. We spent a lot of time last year making ‘Starfighter,’ and the opportunity as Ryan started talking about this character, I was like, ‘Bro, let’s ride.’ We’ll see you in 2028!”

A New Actor Takes on Ghost Rider

Gosling becomes the latest actor to play Ghost Rider on screen. Nicolas Cage previously played Johnny Blaze in Sony’s Ghost Rider (2007) and Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance (2011).

In Marvel Comics, Johnny Blaze is a motorcycle stuntman who makes a deal with the devil Mephisto to save his father. The agreement turns him into the Spirit of Vengeance, a supernatural antihero with a flaming skull and powerful abilities.

The character also appeared in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Gabriel Luna played Robbie Reyes, another version of Ghost Rider, in the television series.

Big Year for Gosling

The casting adds another major franchise role to Gosling’s growing list of projects. He recently starred in Project Hail Mary and will also lead Star Wars: Starfighter next year
