Ryan Condal Teases “All-Out War” in ‘House of the Dragon’ Season 3

Ahead of the June premiere of “House of the Dragon” Season 3, showrunner and co-creator Ryan Condal has described the upcoming Battle of the Gullet as the “craziest episode of television ever made.”

Speaking in Entertainment Weekly’s cover story, Condal teased an intense new season that dives fully into the Targaryen civil war after two seasons of tension and political conflict.

Emma D’Arcy, who reprises the role of Rhaenyra Targaryen, echoed the excitement surrounding the new chapter of the HBO fantasy series.

“The series this time around starts at 60 miles an hour. We’re finally watching a war that has been building for two seasons… I’m so impressed by Ryan and the team,” D’Arcy said.

Set nearly 200 years before the events of “Game of Thrones,” the third season continues George R.R. Martin’s “Fire & Blood” storyline with Aemond Targaryen occupying the Iron Throne while Rhaenyra strengthens her forces with more dragons.

The highly anticipated Battle of the Gullet will see Admiral Sharako Lohar’s Triarchy fleet attempt to break the Velaryon blockade as Rhaenyra’s son, Jace, takes to the skies on dragonback in support of House Velaryon’s navy.

Condal revealed that the ambitious sequence took four years to bring to life because of its massive scale.

“To try to tell this story without doing the Gullet would be trying to film ‘Lord of the Rings’ without doing the Battle of Helm’s Deep,” he said. “If we were gonna do it, we had to do it right. And that meant dragons and ships and multiple theatres of conflict.”

“House of the Dragon” Season 3 premieres June 21 on HBO.
