Rafael Benitez Believes Newcastle has the quality to stay up

The newly appointed Newcastle United manager believes his squad has enough quality to survive this season’s Premier League relegation scrap.

In his first press conference since he took over, the Spaniard says, “I am convinced we will [stay up].”

I am here because I believe these players are good enough.” added the Magpies boss.

Second-from-bottom Newcastle face league leaders Leicester on Monday night – needing a win to climb out of the relegation zone.

Benitez hailed the “positive atmosphere” he found at St James’ Park and praised the squad for their attitude in training.

“At the first moment, we wanted to train,” he said. “Credit to the players on their day off – they wanted to train. It was a great atmosphere.”

Benitez, 55, has signed a three-year contract but confirmed that he has a break clause this summer, should Newcastle be relegated.
