Police deploy 100 female officers to Combat Sexual Abuse in IDP Camps

Reports say thatย Borno Police Command on Saturday had deployed 100 of its female personnel toย IDP camps in the state following reports of sexual abuse.

The Human Rights Watch had accused officials of sexually assaulting women and girls in IDP camps.

The Commissioner of Police in the state,ย Mr. Damian Chukwu, said he took to step to ensure the protection of females in the camps.

โ€œI have constituted a committee, led by the Assistant Commissioner of Police in charge of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), with Divisional Police Officers (DPO) and other senior officers, to take over the daily running of the camps.

โ€œIt is interesting to say that most members of the committee are females,โ€ he said.

โ€ I have also mobilized over 100 women police from different divisions, including mobile police women, to handle day-to-day interaction in the camps.

โ€œThe male officers will be limited to handling of the territorial coverage and patrol with in the camps,โ€ he said.

He said the officers wereย deployed so as to uncover the happenings in the camp.

โ€œThe deployment of women police is also to dig out true happenings in the camps regarding the allegation.

โ€œWe feel that the victims might not want to talk freely to men, but they will be encouraged to open up to women policemen if the allegation is true,โ€ Chukwu said.
