Paramount Pictures’ upcoming “Call of Duty” movie from writer Taylor Sheridan will take place in the franchise’s popular “Modern Warfare” universe. The decision links the film to one of the most successful storylines in the gaming series.

Peter Berg Confirms Setting

Director and co-writer Peter Berg revealed the news during a “Call of Duty in Culture Panel” at Fanatics Fest in New York City on Saturday. The event promoted the October release of “Modern Warfare 4.”

Berg told fans that the film will be set in the “Modern Warfare” universe. The studio has kept plot details secret since announcing the project in September 2025.

Why ‘Modern Warfare’ Matters

The “Call of Duty” franchise launched in 2003 and has grown into more than 30 mainline games. Among its biggest titles are the “Modern Warfare” games, which began with “Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare” in 2007.

The series changed the direction of the franchise. It moved away from World War II battles and focused on modern military conflicts.

The “Modern Warfare” story follows Captain John Price and his Task Force 141 unit. Together, they fight terrorist leader Vladimir Makarov in missions across different regions, including the Middle East.

The storyline will continue later this year with the release of “Modern Warfare 4.” The new game centres on a war between North and South Korea.

Release Date and Future Plans

Paramount Pictures is producing the film in partnership with Activision, which now operates under Xbox ownership. Last month, the studio announced June 30, 2028, as the release date for the untitled movie.

The project could become the start of a larger franchise. When Paramount owner Skydance announced the deal in 2025, sources told Variety that the agreement included opportunities to expand the “Call of Duty” universe beyond a single film.
