Rules, rules, rules! Oh snap! Rules are meant to be broken! While this is true, at times, there are some which are to be followed to the tee. When it comes to dating, there are some rules which, yes, are old-fashioned but are still applicable today.
Here are a few of them:
-
Always look your best
We’re attracted to “good looks.” When something looks good, we appreciate it. When you look nice, you feel nice. You never know when you may meet that special someone be it at the market, mall, BRT, church, friend’s wedding, petrol station or on the street. Also, you don’t want to run into an acquaintance looking less than stellar. Always put your best face forward.
-
Confidence is sexy
Smile, keep your back straight, listen attentively, don’t slouch your shoulders back and speak slowly. This will make you seem confident, even if you are shy and have a bunch of butterflies floating in your tummy. People who exude confidence are attractive.
-
Respect the other person’s time
Yes, ladies can’t help but fuss with their makeup and dress, trying to make sure their look really good, but then in doing this respect his time. No one wants to be stood up, right? Then be there on time. This also applies to the men as well. Don’t try to pull a Diddy because you want to make an entrance. If you are going to be late, always call ahead and inform the person you’re meeting with. Multiple incidents like this show you have no respect for time.
-
Gentlemen offer to pay
This rule will be debated for the next 1000 years, and for the next 1000 years the answer will be the same. If he’s a gentleman, he’ll offer to pay on the first date (regardless of who asks). If he doesn’t, it doesn’t mean he’s a bad guy, but it does mean his chivalry skills are lacking. And yes, there are still gentlemen in Nigeria.
-
Good manners are telling
Never forget your P’s and your Q’s. We should all know that having good manners and saying “please” and “thank you” never ever goes out of style, especially on a date.
-
Bad breath kills
No matter how obvious this is, it is still a reality now. Some people don’t usually know that they have bad breath, that I understand, but nothing kills chances of a kiss (if you want one), or a second date, like bad breath. Visit the dentist regularly, practice healthy brushing habits at home and always carry mints!
-
Never rush into sexual intimacy
Don’t rush it. Letting him have the cookie early is one sure-fire way to ruin a relationship before it starts. That is, unless it’s what you both want, then by all means, go for it!
-
Know when It’s time to move on to the next one
Don’t make excuses! If he doesn’t contact you after the first date, he’s not interested. Move on. Creating a fantasy is a waste of time.
-
No late night rendezvous
Don’t accept requests for late night meetings with your new guy. If he has respect for you and your time, he will make plans for a more decent dating hour. Otherwise, beware that he’s only looking for a booty call.
-
Body language says a lot
Avoid fidgeting with your hair or clothes; this signals insecurity. Remember that only one third of communication is about the words you speak.
-
Don’t offer too much too early
This might seem old and weird. Think about it, you usually easy to know more about someone who know little or nothing about. People like people they can’t figure out in one evening. Don’t divulge too much and keep your dates short. Short dates will keep him longing for more.
-
Honesty is the best policy
Drama is avoided when we tell the truth. There must be a balance you strike with this rule and the former because omitting the truth is also lying.
-
A man without a plan isn’t ready for you
If you find yourself having the “what do you want to do tonight” conversation on the first, second and third dates, chances are, he’s just not that into you.
-
You will kiss a few frogs before you meet your prince
Do not be discouraged when it seems that your dates have never lead to anything meaningful. That’s what dating is about, going out with new people to get to know more about your likes and deal breakers and to get better at your own social skills. Your prince is out there!
-
It’s what he does, not what he says
Actions speak louder than words… PERIOD!
