Astrid made her final public appearance on Wednesday during King Harald’s state funeral in Oslo. Her brother died on August 28, aged 89, after ruling Norway for more than 35 years. Following his death, Haakon VIII became Norway’s new king and inherited the throne from his father.
King Haakon expressed deep sadness over Astrid’s death and praised her long service to Norway’s Royal House. For 14 years, Astrid served as Norway’s First Lady after her mother, Crown Princess Märtha, died in 1954.
She held that role until 1968, when Crown Princess Sonja became the monarchy’s leading female representative.
