NOA Urges Nigerian Youths to Make Informed Choices Towards Healthy Lifestyles

The National Orientation Agency (NOA) has issued a strong call to Nigerian youths to make informed decisions about their lifestyle choices in order to safeguard their health and future. With growing concerns over non-communicable diseases, misuse of substances, and unhealthy dietary habits, NOA emphasises that young people must be mindful of what they eat, how they move, and the habits they embrace.

In recent statements, NOA has highlighted several key areas young people should pay attention to. The agency cautions against excessive consumption of alcohol, the habit of taking medications without proper medical advice, and leading a sedentary lifestyle. It also encourages regular physical activity, balanced diets rich in fruits and vegetables, staying hydrated, and going for routine health checks. These recommendations are part of NOAโ€™s broader effort to help citizens understand the impact of daily habits on long-term wellbeing.

According to NOA, many health issues facing Nigeriaโ€™s young population stem from unwise choices shaped by peer pressure, lack of information, and limited access to accurate health education. The agency believes that when youths have the right knowledge, they are better positioned to avoid risky behaviors such as misuse of medications, poor diet, and inactivity that can lead to serious health problems.

NOA has rolled out this advisory via social media and community outreach efforts, using its Community Orientation and Mobilization Officers (COMOs) to engage with youths in different parts of the country. Messages are delivered in culturally relevant ways to ensure that advice is understood and practical. The agency also partners with the Ministry of Health and other stakeholders to reinforce the message that prevention and early detection through regular medical screening can save lives.

Many Nigerians have welcomed the advisory, with young people responding positively, saying they need more awareness campaigns like this. Some have asked for government and donor support to make healthy food more accessible and safe physical spaces more available for recreation and exercise. At the same time, some point out infrastructure challenges, economic constraints, and misinformation as barriers to adopting healthy lifestyles.

As the NOA continues to promote health education, its message to youths is clear: knowledge and wise choices now can lead to stronger, healthier lives ahead.
