Nigerian-born Hauwa Ojeifo, the founder of She Writes Woman – a women-led movement giving mental health a voice in Nigeria, is the winner of this year’s Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation Global Changemaker Award.
The young and determined woman, Hauwa Ojeifo was recognized by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation for her efforts in promoting gender equality. Through her women-led movement, she has been able to provide “mental health support through a helpline, teletherapy and virtual support groups serving as a first point of contact to ensure that survivors of gender-based violence and those living with mental health conditions have access to confidential psychosocial support and counsellingโ.
She won the goalkeepers award alongside John Nkengasong, the director of Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) who was recognized for his outstanding work in response to Covid-19 as well as his role as the โcentral voice for Africaโs scientific community.”
