Wai Ching Ho, the veteran actor known for playing Madame Gao in Marvel series such as Daredevil, Iron Fist and The Defenders, has died at 82.
Ho reportedly died peacefully after suffering a stroke on July 10. Her co-stars and colleagues shared the news on Instagram. They also paid tribute to her long career in film and television.
Actor Perry Yung announced her passing on July 12. He wrote, “It’s a very emotional moment for all of us who knew Wai Ching Ho. She passed away peacefully after a stroke two days ago. I had seen her perform many times on stage, had many a dim sum, and she came to see @slantperformancegroup many times. I even had the enormous good fortune of having played her husband (parents to @justinchon) in the film High Resolution. Wai Ching was a kind, compassionate human being whose work as an artist lifted every production to a higher standard, and we are better for it. Rest in power, dear friend.”
Born in Hong Kong in 1943, Ho built a career that lasted decades. She worked across film, television and voice acting. Her first American screen role came in the 1990 Robin Williams film Cadillac Man. She later appeared in films including Soapdish, The Sorcerer’s Apprentice and Hustlers.
He also voiced Grandma Wu in Pixar’s Turning Red. She appeared in the comedy series Awkwafina Is Nora from Queens. She also had a voice role in the hit video game Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas.
Her Daredevil co-star Peter Shinkoda also paid tribute. He wrote, “I won’t ever forget you. I learned every minute from you when we were together on and off set. I know wisdom – I’d hang on your every word. We will meet again, my friend. You were beautiful.”
