Mali Coup: Opposition Rejects Transition Deal

Despite the agreement of the military government to the 18-month transition deal, Mali’s popular opposition has rejected the transition deal and accused the military government of a “desire to monopolise and confiscate power”.

The 18-month transition deal backed by the military government has also included a clause which proposes that the transition should be led by either a military or civilian leader. This leaves open the possibility that military officers who seized power in the first instance could remain at the helm for another 18 months until elections are organised.

The opposition group kicking against the transition deal also stated in a statement, “The final document read at the closing ceremony was not consistent with the deliberations of the various groups, including the majority choice of a transition led by a civilian.”
