Chloe Fineman has revealed that “Saturday Night Live” creator and executive producer Lorne Michaels was watching a World Cup match when she called to tell him she was leaving the long-running sketch comedy show after seven seasons.

Speaking to Variety at the premiere of Apple TV’s sports comedy “The Dink” in Los Angeles on Monday night, Fineman recalled the conversation she had with Michaels before her departure became public.

“In classic form, he was watching England vs. Argentina,” Fineman said. “He was like, ‘I’ll call you back. I’m at the game.’ And I was like, ‘The soccer game?’ Then I made a joke; I was like, ‘I assume you’re rooting for England because you’re energetically very British.’ Then he called me back, and we had a really lovely chat.”

Fineman, who joined “SNL” in 2019, announced her exit from the show on July 16. During her seven-year run, she became one of the programme’s standout performers thanks to her celebrity impressions of stars including Jennifer Coolidge, Timothée Chalamet, Drew Barrymore, Britney Spears and JoJo Siwa.

The comedian also spoke about the emotional impact of leaving the NBC show and the close relationships she built with fellow cast members.

“I cried when it was announced,” she said. “You really become a family [with the cast]… I wept when Colin Jost called me today, like, they really are my family. I’m happy that after seven years, I leave on a high note.”

In her Instagram post announcing her departure, Fineman wrote: “After 7 wonderful seasons at ‘SNL’ I have decided it’s time for my next chapter.”

She added: “It’s really hard to leave ‘SNL ’, but it does feel like the right time. I’m going to miss it a lot. But the people who work there are my family, and that place is my home, and I know I’ll never be too far away.”

Fineman’s next major project will see her join Netflix’s upcoming series “Myron Bolitar” as a series regular. The show, inspired by Harlan Coben’s bestselling book series, follows a former basketball player who becomes a sports agent navigating the high-stakes world of professional sports.

She also stars in “The Dink,” a pickleball-themed comedy featuring Jake Johnson, Ben Stiller, Christine Taylor and Ed Harris. The film premieres on Apple TV on July 2
