Lionsgate has set June 4, 2027, as the release date for “John Rambo,” the upcoming prequel to the popular action franchise.
The film will arrive shortly after Disney’s “Star Wars: The Clone Wars,” which opens on May 28. It will also hit cinemas before Sony’s “Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse” on June 11 and Warner Bros.’ “Oceans” prequel on June 25.
“John Rambo” tells the early story of the famous action hero before the events of 1982’s “First Blood.” The Sylvester Stallone film launched the franchise and led to sequels such as “Rambo: First Blood Part II,” “Rambo III,” “Rambo,” and “Rambo: Last Blood.”
The series follows a former United States Army Special Forces soldier. His Vietnam War experience leaves him traumatised but also gives him strong combat skills. He later uses those abilities to fight corrupt police officers, enemy troops and drug cartels.
Noah Centineo will play the younger version of the character made famous by Stallone. David Harbour stars as Major Trautman, while Yao and James Franco also appear in undisclosed roles.
The cast also features Jason Tobin from “A Thousand Blows,” Quincy Isaiah of “Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty,” Jefferson White from “Yellowstone,” and Tayme Thapthimthong of “The White Lotus.”
Jalmari Helander, known for “Sisu,” directed the movie. Rory Haines and Sohrab Noshirvani wrote the script. Stallone also joins the project as an executive producer alongside Anthony and Joe Russo, Trevor Short, Dallas Sonnier and Amanda Presmyk.
