Larry Ellison Media Empire Expands as Family Gains Control of CBS, CNN, HBO and Warner Bros.

Larry Ellison media empire has entered a new era following Skydance’s completed acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery, consolidating major entertainment brands. The October 6 deal brought CBS, CNN, HBO, Warner Bros., Paramount Pictures, and several streaming platforms under one corporate umbrella.

Larry Ellison, Oracle’s billionaire cofounder, backs the family’s growing media influence, while his son David Ellison leads Skydance as chairman and chief executive. The landmark transaction strengthens the family’s position across Hollywood, television, streaming, and American news, creating a powerful entertainment conglomerate.

According to reports, the combined company controls an extensive library of films, television programmes, sports broadcasts, and internationally recognised entertainment franchises. Its portfolio includes Harry Potter, Superman, Mission: Impossible, Nickelodeon, MTV, Paramount+, and HBO Max, reaching audiences across numerous platforms.

The Larry Ellison media empire now raises fresh questions about ownership concentration, particularly as fewer major companies dominate American television and entertainment. Industry observers have also raised concerns about editorial independence because CBS News and CNN now share the same corporate ownership.

David Ellison has pledged to preserve journalistic independence, while CNN and CBS News maintain separate leadership structures under the new company. Meanwhile, the merger creates substantial financial challenges, including significant debt and planned cost savings as executives work to integrate both businesses.

The company aims to compete more aggressively against Disney, Netflix, Amazon, and other entertainment giants in an increasingly competitive global market.
