Tennis icon Serena Williams has withdrawn from the Wimbledon doubles event with her sister, Venus Williams, after a knee injury forced her out of the competition.
The 23-time Grand Slam champion shared the news with fans on social media. She said she tried everything to recover before the tournament, but could not get her knee ready in time.
“I did everything I could to be ready, but unfortunately, my knee just isn’t ready to compete,” Serena wrote.
She also shared photos that showed doctors draining fluid from her knee after her singles match. Serena captioned the images with the word, “Yikes!”
The news disappointed tennis fans who had hoped to see the Williams sisters play together again at Wimbledon. The pair have enjoyed one of the greatest doubles partnerships in tennis. They won several Grand Slam doubles titles and Olympic gold medals during their careers.
Despite the setback, Serena thanked fans for supporting her latest comeback.
“Thank you to the fans for your incredible support and for making this comeback so meaningful,” she wrote, before teasing, “All I can say is stay tuned to a city near you.”
Serena’s Wimbledon campaign has ended, but her message has given fans hope that they may see her back on the court again.
