The Oyo kidnapped pupils and teachers rescued development has brought relief to families after nearly two months of uncertainty and anxiety.
The announcement came from presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga through his verified X account on Friday.

Onanuga confirmed the victims had regained their freedom and shared the news in a brief statement on social media. He wrote, “Finally, all the kidnapped pupils and teachers in Orire, Oyo have been rescued by our security agencies.
“Armed men attacked several schools in Oriire Local Government Area on May 15, 2026, causing panic among residents and school communities. The attackers abducted about 39 pupils and seven teachers before taking them into nearby forests, where they remained for 56 days.
Their prolonged captivity sparked nationwide concern, with parents, civil society groups and concerned Nigerians repeatedly demanding their safe release. Several public appeals and protests called on authorities to intensify rescue efforts and strengthen security around schools.
A video also shared by Bayo Onanuga on X showed one of the rescued teachers expressing gratitude to President Bola Tinubu and the security agencies. The teacher thanked the government and security personnel for securing their freedom after weeks of captivity.
Authorities have not disclosed the circumstances surrounding the victims’ release or whether any ransom was paid before they regained freedom. Officials also remain silent on operational details as investigations into the abduction continue.
The incident once again drew attention to the persistent challenges of kidnapping and banditry affecting several parts of Nigeria. Many Nigerians continue calling for stronger measures to protect schools, students and teachers from similar attacks.
