Duane “Keffe D” Davis, the former gang leader convicted of orchestrating Tupac Shakur’s murder, has received a prison sentence of at least 40 years.
A jury found Davis, 63, guilty of first-degree murder with a deadly weapon in September. Judge Carli Kierny handed down the sentence on Tuesday.
Keffe D vows to appeal
Kierny asked Davis if he had anything to say before sentencing. He replied: “I’m good. I’m gonna appeal this case for sure”.
The judge also addressed the impact of Shakur’s death before handing down the sentence.
“You don’t get to take a man from his family.
“You don’t get to take his very life, his whole future from him, and just walk away from it, especially when that man is Tupac Shakur. The world never forgot about him and his death.”
The jury deliberated for about three hours before reaching its verdict. It found Davis guilty of murder with a deadly weapon. The jury also determined that the crime involved an intent to promote, further or assist a criminal gang.
The jury foreperson announced the verdict in court, saying: “Count one, murder with use of a deadly weapon, guilty of first-degree murder with use of a deadly weapon.”
Davis had pleaded not guilty to the murder charge linked to gang activity.
How Tupac Shakur was killed
Shakur died on September 13, 1996, six days after a drive-by shooting in Las Vegas. The attack left the rapper with a gunshot wound. Doctors placed him on life support, but he did not survive.
He had travelled to Las Vegas to attend a heavyweight boxing match between Mike Tyson and Bruce Seldon.
Davis once led the South Side Compton Crips. Police arrested him in September 2024 over Shakur’s killing.
