Nigerian dance icon Kafayat Shafau has appealed to bloggers, online journalists, and content creators to become more mindful about the kind of stories they promote during what she described as a difficult period for Nigeria.

In an emotional late-night video shared on social media, the dancer said the country is facing several challenges, including economic hardship, emotional stress, and insecurity, adding that digital platforms should focus more on content that promotes healing, awareness, and progress.

According to her, entertainment and celebrity news can help people escape daily struggles, but such stories should still be shared with empathy and sensitivity.

“We need to desensitise from certain kinds of content and project content that can bring progressiveness and forward movement for our country,” she said.

Dr Kaffy noted that while some trending topics may create awareness around relationship issues and human behaviour, Nigerians should not become consumed by gossip and distractions while the country is battling more serious problems.

“We should not get lost in that rabbit hole of content that does not create progressiveness,” she added.

The entertainer stressed that everyone has a role to play in nation-building, especially those who control information and online narratives. She urged bloggers and media platforms to use their influence more intentionally by promoting stories that uplift people and encourage positive action.

“There should be more content on how to deal with trauma, how to heal, how to be better with each other,” she said.
