Nigerian football legend Jay-Jay Okocha has revealed that he still jokingly pays royalties to his brother for using his famous nickname. Okocha made the humorous revelation during an appearance on The Obi One Podcast, where he discussed his iconic football career.
Born Augustine Azuka Okocha, the former midfielder adopted the Jay-Jay nickname from his older brother, who played football before him. According to Okocha, his brother already carried the nickname before he eventually adopted it and transformed it into something globally recognised.
The football legend joked that he continues paying royalties because his brother originally owned the name before his successful career. Okocha later turned Jay-Jay Okocha into one of football’s most recognisable names through his spectacular skills and entertaining playing style.
His dazzling performances helped establish the Jay-Jay Okocha name across Europe during an extraordinary career spanning several major football clubs. Okocha first gained international attention at Eintracht Frankfurt, where his creativity and unpredictable dribbling quickly attracted football supporters across Germany.
He later joined Paris Saint-Germain, where his technical ability and flair earned widespread admiration among European football audiences. The Nigerian star eventually moved to Bolton Wanderers, becoming a Premier League favourite and one of Nigeria’s most celebrated footballers.
His career also included spells with Fenerbahçe, Qatar SC and Hull City before he eventually retired from professional football. Beyond his club achievements, Okocha represented Nigeria internationally and helped the Super Eagles win the 1994 Africa Cup Nations.
