T-Pain, the American singer, has sued Konvict Entertainment, Akon’s record label, over alleged unpaid royalties of $489,047 from his music catalogue.
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution obtained court documents showing that the Grammy winner filed the lawsuit against his former label. T-Pain, whose real name is Faheem Najm, claims Konvict owes him royalties from his recordings.
The singer filed the 80-page lawsuit at the Fulton County Superior Court on September 4.
According to the lawsuit, a distributor paid Konvict $1.3 million in royalties earlier this year. T-Pain claims the label paid him only half of his share.
The 41-year-old also accused Konvict of breaching a settlement agreement from an earlier legal dispute.
T-Pain sued the label in 2018 after it allegedly failed to pay an agreed advance for his album ‘Oblivion’. Both sides settled the dispute last year.
The singer now claims Konvict violated the settlement terms. He is seeking the $489,047 in royalties he says the label owes him.
T-Pain began his music career after recording a personalised version of Akon’s hit song ‘Locked Up’.
Akon liked the recording and signed T-Pain to Konvict Muzik. The singer released his debut studio album, ‘Rappa Ternt Sanga’, through the label in 2005.
The album produced hit songs such as ‘I’m Sprung’ and ‘I’m ‘n Luv (Wit a Stripper)’.
The album’s success helped establish T-Pain as a major figure in R&B and hip-hop.
