When speaking about Bacteria, the first thing that may come to mind is the need to protect the body from these organisms. However, no human system can function properly without some type of bacteria. Bacteria are simply microscopic, single-celled organisms that exist and thrive in different environments.
There are ‘friendly’ Bacteria that help to the balance of the human digestive system. Bacteria such as;
1. Bifidobacteria: These Bacteria grow naturally in the gut and live in the intestine. They help to break down food, keep the gut healthy and contribute to its normal functioning. These Bacteria also release gas in the course of their functions, which then leads to the urge to release accumulated gas from the human body, in the form of Fart. They also prevent constipation and diarrhoea, which might disrupt the digestive process. Though they grow naturally, they can also be taken as a form of supplements.
2. Escherichia Coli: The Escherichia bacteria is also known as E.Coli. They are grown naturally in the gut and also help digestion. One of the advantages of the bacteria is that they use nutrients that harmful bacteria need to live, making it hard these harmful bacteria to thrive in the human body. The E. coli is also feared as harmful bacteria because there are strains of it that can make people sick if they eat. These strains mostly; 0157: H7 are seen in undercooked beef, unwashed vegetables, or unpasteurized milk.
3. Lactobacillus Acidophilus: These bacteria don’t exist in the body, though it helps to process certain foods that are taken into the body. It is often referred to simply as ‘lactic acid.’ These bacteria helps to ferment milk into yoghurt. When ingested, they also take up space in the digestive tract, preventing harmful bacteria from settling in.
There is a need to aware of friendly bacteria and harmful bacteria. The friendly bacteria maintain the normal functioning of the body and also prevent harmful bacteria from thriving in the body.
