The organisers of the Headies Awards have defended their decision to host the 18th edition in Toronto, Canada. The move has sparked debate among fans and industry observers.

Some critics questioned why one of Nigeria’s biggest music awards ceremonies would take place outside the country. However, Headies founder Ayo Animashaun believes the focus should be on the growth of the platform and the global reach of Afrobeats.
Why Toronto Was Chosen
Animashaun explained that Toronto offers a strong connection to African music and culture. The city is home to a large Nigerian community and a growing number of Afrobeats fans.
He said the Headies aims to celebrate African music wherever audiences continue to embrace it. According to him, Toronto provides the right environment for that vision.
The organiser added that Afrobeats has gained massive popularity across North America. As a result, taking the awards to Canada creates new opportunities for artists and the industry.
Expanding the Reach of Afrobeats
Animashaun stressed that the Headies must continue to evolve with the changing music landscape. He argued that hosting the event abroad helps expose Nigerian talent to wider audiences.
He also noted that the award platform now serves as more than a local event. It has become a global showcase for African music, culture, and creativity.
Over the years, Afrobeats has grown into one of the world’s most influential music genres. Nigerian artists now headline international festivals, sell out arenas, and earn recognition on major global charts.
Headies Remains Rooted in Nigeria
Despite the venue change, Animashaun maintained that the Headies remains a proudly Nigerian brand. He said the event will continue to promote local talent and celebrate achievements within the country’s music industry.
The Headies has recognised some of Nigeria’s biggest stars since its inception. The award ceremony has also helped spotlight emerging artists and music professionals.
