Gospel Singer Buchi Atuonwu Opens Up On His Dark Past In A Secret Cult

Recently, Nigerian gospel reggae sensation Buchi Atuonwu, better known by his stage name Buchi, talked about his journey from cultism to Christianity.

In a candid interview with Gaise Baba on the program Black Flame, Buchi discussed the spiritual awakening that caused him to renounce his previous associations and commit to a life of sharing the gospel via music.โ€‹

When Buchi reflected on leaving the cult, he revealed that his perspective on these kinds of organisations changed significantly.

He came to see that cultism had profound roots in spiritual realms and was not just about secret meetings or rituals.

This revelation made him acknowledge the futility of confronting spiritual challenges with physical means.

He articulated, “You can’t bring a knife to a gun fight and hope to win. It’s a spiritual thing.” โ€‹

Buchi described a specific event that marked a sea change in his life. He was in charge of a procession of about 200 people at one in the morning, between one and two in the morning.

To be heard by everyone, he had to project his voice loudly without the use of a microphone.

The scene was dramatic: some participants carried red torches, which stand for danger, while others carried coffins on their heads. All of them were joined by a shared, albeit sinister, goal.

He was leading the chanting when a voice from the left, different from the convoy on his right, whispered into his ear, “You don’t belong here.” โ€‹

He was taken aback by this unexpected message, but he carried on with the march.

The cult’s character as a unifying force that cuts over ethnic boundaries was highlighted by the diverse gathering of young and old people, all of whom were ready for possible violence.

Buchi stated, “The cult is a leveller where people are united by a course, not tribe.” โ€‹

The moment Buchi embraced a new path

Buchi sought a deeper comprehension of his life’s purpose as a result of this life-changing event.

He looked to Jesus Christ for direction and meaning after realising the spiritual struggles he was facing.

His journey from a life mired in cultism to one dedicated to gospel music and service began with this crucial choice.

Prior to devoting himself entirely to music, Buchi worked as a lecturer at the University of Lagos.

His transformational path is demonstrated by his rise from university and nightclubs, where he worked as a DJ, to becoming a well-known gospel performer.

His musical career has been distinguished by a number of CDs that combine gospel sermons with reggae rhythms, which have struck a chord with many Nigerians.
