Germany’s football association has opened talks with former Liverpool and Borussia Dortmund manager Jürgen Klopp after the national team’s shock World Cup defeat to Paraguay.
The German Football Association (DFB) wants Klopp to replace Julian Nagelsmann as head coach. The move comes after Germany crashed out of the World Cup following Monday’s penalty shoot-out defeat.
In a statement released on Friday, the DFB said Klopp has “already signalled his willingness in principle” to take over the role. It added that both sides will continue discussions before reaching a final agreement.
Klopp Faces Major Rebuilding Job
Nagelsmann was under contract until the 2028 European Championship. However, German newspaper Bild reported that he could receive about €7 million ($8 million) in severance pay.
Klopp is one of football’s most successful coaches. He won the UEFA Champions League and the Premier League with Liverpool. Before that, he led Borussia Dortmund to two Bundesliga titles.
He became known for his high-energy counter-pressing style. He also built strong connections with supporters at both clubs.
The 59-year-old now serves as Global Head of Soccer for Red Bull GmbH’s international football network. He also works as a World Cup commentator for Deutsche Telekom AG’s MagentaTV.
Germany Seeks Return to Glory
If appointed, Klopp will inherit a team searching for success. Germany has suffered early exits in its last three major tournaments. Monday’s defeat to Paraguay also marked the country’s first World Cup penalty shoot-out loss.
Germany last won a major trophy at the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil.
